Tax relief to reduce the financial burden of childcare

Thanks to the introduction of new programs, families, child care providers and employees can expect some tax relief next year.

The Child Care Tax Credit and the School Readiness Tax Credit aim to reduce the financial burden on families, providers and those who help improve early education across the state.

Elizabeth Everett is deputy director of First Five Nebraska, a public policy organization that is launching a campaign to educate taxpayers about their options.

“This is a huge relief for many people, not only for parents who depend on childcare, but also for daycare workers and providers who are struggling financially,” Everett said.

The Child Care Tax Credit allows families and those who help improve child care to receive a tax benefit, while the School Readiness Tax Credit allows child care programs and staff to apply for tax credits.

State Senator Eliot Bostar hopes these options will address Nebraska’s child care shortage.

“Programs are closing all the time in Lincoln, so it’s so important that we make sure that every eligible person has access to these resources so we can provide them with this benefit,” Bostar said.

Child care contributors and employees can apply for the credits now. Families and child care owners can apply starting January 1.
