Sky vs Sun Predictions, Tips & Odds – 9-19

Alyssa Thomas and Co. want to maintain their lead over Las Vegas and third place in the playoffs and have every reason to go full throttle when they play as double-digit favorites in Chicago.

The Connecticut Sun might have viewed this final regular season game against the Chicago Sky as an opportunity to give their core players a rest, but they won’t have that luxury as they try to hold on to third place.

With motivation on their side, my Sky vs. Sun predictions and my WNBA picks predict Connecticut will hit the ground running on Thursday, September 19th.

Sky vs. Sun Predictions

My best bet
Sun -14 (-110 at FanDuel)

My analysis
After a rough week that included back-to-back losses to WNBA title contenders, this showdown should be a welcome change for the Connecticut Sun. They have played well against teams in the bottom half of the standings, evening the spread in their last four games against teams with a losing record.

That includes an 86-66 win over the Sparks earlier this month, and I’m betting on a similar performance here against a Chicago Sky team that has slowed down considerably since the Olympic break. Connecticut has won eight of the last nine meetings between these teams, with the only loss coming in overtime, and it’s hard to see anything other than a double-digit win for the hosts tonight, even if they bench their starters in the fourth quarter.

This choice also addresses the Sky’s offensive weaknesses. Chicago has scored 70 points or less in three of its last four games, and the visitors may once again be without Chennedy Carter and Kamilla Cardoso.

That spells trouble against the Sun’s stellar defense, and it was Rachel Banham and Lindsay Allen who scored the bulk of the points in Tuesday’s 86-70 loss to the Atlanta Dream. The wide spread suggests we’ll see a lot of Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and the rest of Connecticut’s starters tonight.

The hosts have every reason to seek a win that would secure them third place ahead of the Aces, meaning they won’t have to face the powerhouse Liberty until the third round. The Sun have a 13-6 record at home this year, and given the Sky’s long injury list, I expect it to be a one-sided game at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Sun -14

Below 153.5

Lindsay Allen Over 9.5 points

Although they do score points, Under is an attractive option and I can’t see this injury-plagued Sky team having consistent offense. Too much is being asked of the supporting players and Chicago only scored 58 points against the Washington Mystics last week.

The Unders are 7-3 in the Sky’s last 10 games and 6-1 in the Sun’s last seven games after a day’s rest. That seems to be the safer way to play.

Then there’s Connecticut’s offense, which is inconsistent at times — and only Chicago attempts fewer three-pointers per game than the Sun. I expect defense to be the number one priority, unlike the teams’ first three meetings this year, all of which exceeded today’s mark of 153.5.

Someone needs to score some baskets for the Sky, and I’m betting Allen will be playing more. She just had her best game of the month – 16 points, including eight free throws, on Tuesday – and had 14 points in the last game against Connecticut.

Chicago has so little offensive power that Allen should get more than enough playing time and shots to bring the over within reach.
