“I knew this wasn’t normal because everything else was quiet,” said Jim Bush, a neighbor who lives near I-75. “Everything else was quiet, all the cars stopped, then there was no noise after that, so I thought something had gone wrong.”

“I heard a loud bang… that scared me a little bit and I jumped up and everyone ran over there,” said another neighbor.

Officials say the traffic officer is hospitalized and is lucid and responsive. MSP said doctors are continuing to examine the vehicle.

According to police, the officer was wearing a seat belt in his patrol car when it was hit. He was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed.

Police have not released any information about the other driver and are still investigating. They are reconstructing the accident scene to determine what happened before the crash.

Police remind drivers of the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow to at least 10 miles per hour and move completely into a clear lane when approaching a stationary vehicle with its flashing, rotating or swinging lights on. If you are unable to move over due to traffic, weather or road conditions, slow to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit and pass carefully, giving the authorized vehicle as much room as possible.
