Moment when angry Gen Z service dog owner clashes with Macy’s staff: “Federal law takes precedence over store policy”

An angry service dog owner filmed the moment she was attacked by a Macy’s manager who was upset that her dog was running around the store without a leash.

The TikTok video shows a black Labrador lying on the tiled floor of the store in Lake Grove, New York. It also includes audio of the dog’s owner and her friend being told, “You are not allowed to have dogs off leash.”

The dog handler Payton then tries to explain to the manager, who later reveals herself to be Ashley, that her dog and her friend’s dogs are service animals.

“I understand that, but they have to be on a leash,” the manager tells them.

But the dog owner does not give up and explains: “According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, dogs do not have to be on a leash if it interferes with work.”

A police dog handler named Payton was filmed getting into an argument with an obviously ignorant Macy’s manager who was upset that her dog was not on a leash

When Ashley tries to argue again, Payton is heard telling her, “Federal law takes precedence over business policy.”

Although the store manager still says the dogs must be on a leash, Payton tries again to remind her of the law in the clip posted in June.

“Under state and federal law, they do not need to be on a leash. It is for their safety and ours,” she said, later explaining in a comment on her video that her dog Onyx jumps up to alert her to an impending medical emergency and that his leash could become tangled.

At this point, the manager offers to help them with their shopping – but Payton rejects the idea.

“You are trained,” she argues, “and I could explain the law to you if you want.”

“I’m trying to help you,” Ashley then claims.

“But you obviously don’t understand,” Payton replies.

Payton argued that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service dogs do not have to be leashed if it interferes with their duties.

The manager then tries again to find someone to help them with their shopping, saying she understands what Payton is saying, “but that’s the store policy.”

“I realize these are your dogs and they have been trained to do this,” the manager says, but Payton argues that “they are medical devices, not pets” and that “federal law takes precedence over these regulations.”

The manager then tries to tell Payton and her friend that there are other customers in the store and eventually tells them to go to security.

“Yes, we can go to security,” Payton replies, “because that’s against the law.”

The comment seems to make Ashley angry, who again offers to help the girls with their shopping.

“We don’t need help,” Payton replies. “That’s what we have them for, but it’s against the law to keep them on a leash.”

“You can be sued, I can sue you for money,” she warns.

“I understand,” Ashley insists, offering to help them with their shopping again.

“This is ridiculous,” says Payton, growing increasingly angry. “But you don’t understand, because if you did, you’d know the law. Should I put it to you right now?” she asks.

Nevertheless, the argument continues for several minutes, with Payton seemingly losing her breath. Then the video cuts to Payton lying on the ground with Onyx next to her.

“And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when you take care of a service dog,” her friend says. “Thank you, Ashley, thank you, Macy’s.”

“Payton fainted after that interaction,” she explains, “and I almost did, too.”

In an update a few days later, Payton said she returned to the store the next day and someone told her Ashley was “just uneducated and it was fine.”

“Obviously it’s still not OK because as you can see, we tried to educate her in the video, but she just wouldn’t listen,” Payton said.

“So obviously still not OK, and in my opinion she deserves to be fired.”

She added that the company had seen the video and contacted her saying it was “disappointed by the incident.”

“But I was obviously talking to a bot because it asked me for my information and I said something like, ‘Before I give you my information, I want to know what action is being taken?’ and then they just said, ‘We’re disappointed to hear that, thank you for giving us your information,'” she claimed.

Payton also said she gave the company her cellphone number and said in a comment that the manager had been fired.

The manager was apparently fired from the Lake Grove, New York, store, but many online users advised Payton to take legal action against the company.

But many on the Internet called for her to take legal action against the company.

“You should seriously contact an attorney and explore your options,” one woman commented on her video. “This employee caused you physical harm and Macy’s must be held accountable for compensating you for that.”

Another TikTok user pleaded, “Please sue them and keep us updated. The way they treated you was disgusting,” while a third urged Payton not to speak to the company without a lawyer present.

“Please just call a lawyer because Macy’s is huge and spread out and they have to train ALL employees at all locations,” she said.

“Get a lawyer. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING, do not agree to anything,” urged another.

DailyMail.com has contacted Macy’s for comment.
