Lee Carsley: Interim England coach sticks with attacking philosophy

Interim coach Lee Carsley will not change his attacking approach when England face Finland on Sunday, although the shock defeat to Greece dented his chances of taking over the role permanently.

England had enjoyed an encouraging start to the Nations League under Carsley, with wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland before suffering defeat at Wembley on Thursday.

Carsley’s experiment of fielding five attackers without an outright striker backfired as Greece ran out 2-1 winners.

England will be looking to bounce back in Helsinki this weekend and Carsley insisted “nothing changes” to their attacking approach.

“I want my teams to play, I want us to attack, and once we had the players we had available, I wanted to try something different,” Carsley, who has taken over on an interim basis until November, said during the Football Association is looking for a permanent successor following the departure of Gareth Southgate.

“In hindsight it’s perfect because it never happened.

“It wouldn’t stop me from trying something else in the future because I did well in that situation.”

“I was a defensive player for 17, 18, 19 years, just sitting there and playing the counterattack.”

“This is definitely not the way I want to train. Nothing will change.”
