BVB experienced a turbulent opening phase in the first Champions League home game of the season against Celtic Glasgow. The main actor of the first nine minutes: Emre Can.

It couldn’t be more exciting! BVB captain Emre Can experienced a wild roller coaster ride of emotions in a short period of time. In the first Champions League home game of the season against Celtic Glasgow (NOW in the LIVE TICKER), Can literally goes “from zero to hero” – and back again. But first things first.

After just a few seconds, Can caused a moment of shock. While trying to clear a throw-in from the guests, Can got stuck in the grass when he lunged and then lay with his face distorted in pain. “This doesn’t look good for Emre Can,” feared TV expert Benedikt Höwedes Prime-Microphone worse.

Can scores – and makes a mistake when BVB concedes a goal

But after a short treatment there was an all-clear. And as soon as he returned to the field, Can was the center of attention again. After a foul by Celtic keeper Kasper Schmeichel and Bynoe Gittens, referee José María Sánchez awarded the point. Can took action as the number one penalty taker and confidently converted a shot into the middle to give BVB an early lead (7th).

But the cheering quickly died down – also because of Can! Because his attempt to clear a cross from ex-Augsburg player Arne Engels failed. He only touched the ball lightly with his head, so that it hit the hip of the onrushing Daizen Maeda and from there landed in the net to equalize 1-1 (9th). Can’s frustration at his unfortunate action was evident and he held his hands in front of his face.

Adeyemi provides a highlight

But BVB had the right answer ready: After a long hit from Gregor Kobel, Serhou Guirassy passed the ball on to Julian Brandt with his heel. His through ball landed at Karim Adeyemi, who didn’t miss the chance in front of Schmeichel (11th). And for once Can had no part in this action.

After a short break, Adeyemi provided the next highlight: with a remarkable shot into the left corner, the winger further extended Dortmund’s lead (29th). “What a goal,” enthused Höwedes: “Absolute cracker!”
